Adaptable Teams

The Adaptable Team © Framework

The Adaptable Team © Framework comprises the core components required for team success. This evidence-based approach helps team leaders and team members create and sustain high performance within and between teams at all levels of a modern organisation.

If you wish to succeed as a team, the three areas are imperative to get right:

  • Outcome
  • Action
  • Mindset

It is critical to be clear on the outcome the team is seeking to achieve – these include the results though also those outcomes which make for sustainable performance.

The team then needs to be clear on the action it will take to create that outcome – effective decision making, tapping into the different perspective and the support and challenge team members can offer.

And finally, and perhaps most critically, the team needs to foster a team mindset a mindset in which trust, commitment, accountability are there in abundance and in which the team can return to why the team has come together in the first place.

In other words, the team is required to answer these simple questions:

What outcome are we aiming for?
What do we need to do together well?
Why do we exist as a team?

What then makes success much more likely is good team leadership and a team learning rhythm.

Team Leadership - of yourself, your colleagues and from the Team Leader – ensures that the team can adapt and stay on course despite challenges.

By establishing a culture of positive and continuous improvement the Team Learning Rhythm will ensure the team learns and performs to its very best.

A final note about performance improvement and learning

To improve the outcome the team is getting, clearly learning is essential. Learning in a team requires continuous correction and openness to new and various data (including feelings, and thoughts) by which to make decisions and improve performance.

Sometimes, to improve the outcome will require the team to go beyond what we describe as ‘Level 1’ just correcting the choice of action, but go to ‘Level 2’, and examine at some depth, and then address the collective mindset – how team members are thinking and feeling about the team and its task. This needs to be conductive to a high quality of action to build high and sustainable performance.
